Project on Statutory Authorities
Statutory authorities, also known as statutory bodies or
statutory agencies, are organizations established and regulated by law
(statute) to perform specific functions or duties. These bodies derive their
powers and responsibilities from legislation passed by a government or legislative
body.
They often operate independently of direct government control and have a defined mandate to carry out certain tasks, such as regulation, oversight, enforcement, or service provision within a particular area of public interest or policy. Examples of statutory authorities include regulatory agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), utility commissions, and various professional licensing boards.
